Scary Close

Scary Close

After decades of failed relationships and painful drama, Donald Miller decided he'd had enough. Impressing people wasn't helping him connect with anyone. He'd built a life of public isolation, yet he dreamed of meaningful relationships. So at forty years old he made a scary decision: to be himself no matter what it cost. From the author of Blue Like Jazz comes a book about the risk involved in choosing to impress fewer people and connect with more, about the freedom that comes when we stop acting and start loving. It is a story about knocking down old walls to create a healthy mind, a strong family, and a satisfying career. And it all feels like a conversation with the best kind of friend: smart, funny, true, important. Scary Close is Donald Miller at his best.

Henry Miller New Perspectives

Henry Miller New Perspectives

Henry Miller: New Perspectives offers an exciting collection of essays that illuminate Miller and his work. The essays use a wide range of theoretical approaches and demonstrate that Miller's narratives definitely reward close reading. The volume also treats Miller holistically and considers a variety of his texts and concerns. Particularly absorbing is the way that the book combines fresh reexaminations of classic Miller themes with penetrating investigations of previously unexplored--and unexpected--topics. In short, the book indeed provides a host of 'new perspectives' on Henry Miller and should reinvigorate debate over a shamefully neglected American writer. Scholarly responses to Henry Miller's works have never been numerous and for many years Miller was not a fashionable writer for literary studies. In fact, there exist only three collections of essays concerning Henry Miller's oeuvre. Since these books appeared, a new generation of international Miller scholars has emerged, one that is re-energizing critical readings of this important American Modernist.

Letters from Henry Miller to Hoki Tokuda Miller

Letters from Henry Miller to Hoki Tokuda Miller

About the Author Joyce Howard's editing is sympathetic and perceptive, and her brief introduction to the letters clearsighted and moving. She met Henry Miller through her friendship with Anais Nin, when Miller was in his late seventies and living in Pacific Palisades. Some time after Miller's death, Hoki Tokuda Miller asked Joyce Howard to work on the correspondence, and make a selection from the hundreds of letters, cards, photos and articles which Henry had bequeathed Hoki. --This text refers to the edition.

Henry Miller The Inhuman Artist A Philosophical Inquiry

Henry Miller The Inhuman Artist A Philosophical Inquiry

What are rather complex philosophical differences are explained with great finesse by Manniste, and this in many ways is one of the main strengths of this book. Manniste shows an incredibly thorough grasp of the intricacies of Miller's philosophical thought processes throughout his life. [...] This is a well-written, well-researched book that aims to place Miller as a philosophical writer, deserving of more respect than he currently receives from academia. It makes good use of the work that has been done by other Miller specialists and is absolutely representative of the high standard of analysis that Miller deserves. Pucked Up

Pucked Up

Miller “Buck” Butterson has been banging his way through life ever since a puck to the face fixed his messed up front teeth. After five years in the NHL, deflecting goals on the ice and scoring them with puck bunnies, Miller has decided he’s ready for a girlfriend. A real, non-bunny girlfriend to take on dates, and not jump into bed with after five seconds of conversation. Miller thinks he’s found that woman in his teammate’s sister. Except, unlike team captain and all-around nice guy Alex Waters—who happens to date his stepsister, Miller’s media reputation as a manwhore is well earned. Beyond that minor detail, Miller doesn’t know the first thing about relationships or the time and effort they require. Miller learns—eventually—that if he wants to make Sunshine “Sunny” Waters fall for him, he's going to have to do a whole lot more than show her his stick skills in the bedroom.

One Night Denied The One Night Trilogy

One Night Denied The One Night Trilogy

This was a great second installment of Livy and Miller’s story. The minute I finished I immediately went to see when the final book would be released and then promptly pouted about how far away February seems. I completely fell for Miller in One Night: Promised, so I was very much looking forward to seeing where his relationship with Livy would go. Not only that, but I was also desperate to see how much more of his past and present would be revealed. As much as I love him, Miller hurt Livy so badly in the first book, and I was anxious to how and if she was going to be able to bounce back.

Not Garry Trudeau, who honed in early, relentlessly and deftly highlighting The Donald's profound character flaws since 1987. It's all there - the arrogance and narcissism, the callowness and sexism, the rudeness and condescension, the coarsening of public discourse; and a good portion of the Doonesbury cast has been tangled up in it. Join Duke, Honey, Earl, J.J., Mike, Mark, Roland, Boopsie, B.D., Sal, Alice, Elmont, Sid, Zonker, Sam, Bernie, Rev.
